Greening the Concrete Jungle
Third Avenue, a central artery of downtown Seattle and main entry to the city would ideally be a lively, thriving and inviting retail and transit core. In 2007 however, Third Avenue was in a bad state of disrepair and not pedestrian friendly with degraded infrastructure caused by increasingly high volumes of single occupancy vehicular traffic. Crime along the street was also of concern with two high profile crime incidents spurring stakeholders and mayor to put revamping this corridor as a top priority.
Leading the first phase of this project through simple design interventions and re-working of existing site features, I developed a planting plan for over sized planters to create dimension and improve the experiential qualities of the street. The project also involved planning for future in-ground street trees and improvements to street navigability.
